Let’s see, over two months between updates? Yeah, I’m just that good. Well over a month I received a package from Zeph containing a beautiful knit scarf and amazing sewn bag. Since she has the photo of the scarf online I’m including that here. The bag, I’ll try to get to.

Last year I tried to photograph everything and became completely overwhelmed. This year I’m going to post photos donors provide, do group shots, or take individual shots of what interests me. I can’t go crazy and none of the other knitters in the group has any interest in posting or photographing. I do need to count all the items I have received thus far. It’s not as much as I hoped to have received by now but it is still good. Plus we have some interesting pieces. So thank you to everyone who has sent things so far!

Some questions have come up about what we want for this drive. Basically, we want whatever you want to make, from basic necessities like scarves, hats, and blankets to something frivilous like felted purses, toys, or hair pieces. I think the only thing we really can’t easily accept are blanket squares because we just don’t have the man power to seam things up. So check out the 2007 project FAQs for more items we are looking for and let us know if there is something else we should recommend.
I am a member of an online knitting community and asked the members what they had made for similar charity projects and what they would recommend. The men and women of that community are fantastic and came up with some great ideas and things to keep in mind.
“I would say basic things are good. I think that 100% wool is a good choice for many reasons, mainly being that it’s cold out there and some people don’t have perminant shelter, and not everyone has access to a washing machine.”
“I think that knitted dolls / animals is a great idea for the kids. It gives them hope, and that is the best gift of all.”
“…but we also made purses, hair scrunchies[tons of those...great stash busters], knitted men’s ties…. They might not be as “necessary” as hats or mittens but a. it was a good way to use up small yarn balls and b. everybody needs something frivolous and c. these things are all still quiet useful [espicially the scrunchies!]“
“My two cents would be to only use machine washable AND dryable fibers. Most superwash yarns can be machine dried, but it’d be best to do some swatches, some will shrink significantly. Not only will the shelters not have space to properly lay out knitted items to dry, but I can pretty much guarantee that they will not have the time or inclination to pay attention to any special care instructions.”

Get your needles out! We are knitting, quilting, sewing, and crocheting for homeless shelters and domestic shelters. All items will go to shelters in Albany and surrounding areas.
I want to set out a goal right now. Let’s get over 200 pieces made this year for people who need a little help.

I’ve not updated in a long, long time. Our 2006 drive was successful. With only relaxed word of mouth we dontated over 130 hats to 3 hospitals in our area! Can you believe that? 1-3-0. Unbelievable. If I haven’t thanked each and every one of you, I do. Without your time and energy, we wouldn’t have been able to do as much as we did.
The group is currently finalizing our charity drive for 2007. It will start in the next few weeks and go until Halloween. This year it’s not just knitting or crochet. This year, we will include sewing and quilting! Basically, anything made by hand. So keep checking in as we get ready to launch the next project.
