2007 Project & FAQs

2006 Drive |

The 2007 Made by Hand project is knitting, crocheting, and sewing for the Homeless. Take some time out of your project schedule to make something for someone who could use some warmth next winter. Please read the information below and get involved.

How do I participate?
If you know us in real life, contact one of our members or just stop by and give us your item. If you don’t know who we are in real life, email us at madebyhand0 (at) gmail (dot) com Just replace the items in parenthesis with the appropriate symbol. You know (at) with @ and (dot) with .

Can I just buy an item at a store and give it to you?

Unfortunately no. We’re knitters, crocheters, quilters, and seamstresses and are trying to keep the spirit of our hobby/obsession for this project.

What do both groups need?

Domestic Violence Shelter

  • hats
  • gloves/mittens
  • scarves
  • afghans/quilts/blankets
  • shawls
  • potholders/dishtowels/washcloths
  • dolls for children
  • sweaters (Although one shelter mentioned these were not as popular because matching both size and taste together is often difficult)

Homeless Shelter (please stay away from hard to wash items)

  • hats
  • scarves
  • gloves/mittens
  • afghans/quilts/blankets to give to people leaving long-term housing to move to their home
  • socks
  • washclothes/potholders/dishtowels
  • dolls for children
  • sweaters

What should I include with the item I give?

  • General location
  • Yarn fiber used (i.e. cotton, microfiber, etc.)
  • Washing instructions.
  • And intended size (i.e. child, adult, petite woman)
  • The intended group. I’d hate to give your scarf to a domestic violence shelter if you really made it for the homeless shelter and vice versa.

What kind of yarn should I use?

This depends on the group. Machine washable is best for the homeless shelter. Hand washing or gentle cycle items would be better left to the domestic violence shelters.

What size should I make?

Size does not matter. There will be enough people that someone will be found to wear what you are making

Can I donate money?

We are not accepting money. If you would like to donate money, contact your local shelter and give them help or find a friend who knits, crochets, quilts, or sews and buy him/her the materials to make something.

When would you like the items?

We are accepting hats until October 31, 2007.

How do I get the hat to you?

There are two ways to give us your items. If you know us in person, just hand it off. Otherwise, email madebyhand0 (at) gmail (dot) com (replacing the items in parenthesis with the appropriate symbol) and we’ll get an address to you.
