Red Hat

August 31, 2006

Another hat from a coworker. I don’t know what the yarn is at this time but it is beautiful. There are these little flecks of green, blue, and yellow throughout that don’t quite come through in the photo. Plus the yarn is really soft. Once I find out what the yarn is, I’ll update with the info. I think I’d love to get my hands on this yarn.

Unfortunately, my styrofoam hat is smaller than the average head so it fits a little differently here than it does on a person.

What I really should be doing is posting pictures of the hats I made and received while on vacation (I completed three, my mom made one, and a friend of my mom’s from NESFA brought me another).  But that would require taking pictures, which I haven’t had time to do yet!  So since I’m surfing links for more crochet hats, I thought I’d post some of the ones I find interesting.

Okay, so it’s only a few.  But more than enough for me to get moving again (I’ve got a knit one on my needles right now which I have to finish up, too!).  And I’ll try post pictures finally tonight!

tatt3r’s hat!

Bon-bon finishes a hat!

August 25, 2006

Our knitting member Bon-bon finished her first hat! Check it out behind the cut below.

So far I have, in my possesion, 3 women’s hats. While Mini Monster is on her second women’s hat and Tryslora has done at least 3 women’s hats (I think). I’m almost done with my first (Monday should be the cut off date). And I know Anna has posted about an fantastic hat she has made.

We have a lot of women’s hats so far. I wonder if it’s because so far only women have made hats and we make what we like. Maybe? To fill the gap I’m thinking of making two mens hats and dying to make one of them reversible which would be so much fun. But it means I need to buy more yarn. Ugh. I’m yarn obsessed. The Husband may kill me…

And the hats start rolling in…

August 24, 2006

I work at a college and sent a spam mailing to all faculty and staff to see if anyone was interested. This week two lovely ladies gave me hats! (behind the cut for those who can’t see the link)

Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs.

August 22, 2006

Today is August 22. Today is the 3-year anniversary of my mother’s (and Mini Monster’s) death. Our mom died of lung cancer. She battled for 1 1/2 years and when we thought she had won, she started having vision problems. Then while going for a MRI, fully sedated, she slipped into a coma and died.

One year later I began knitting. A few weeks ago I began musing about an article I wanted to write for Knitty (which I’m not going to get into here because I don’t know if I will submit it and if I do, if it will be accepted) and decided to make a chemo cap for my mom. My knitting group loved the idea and Made by Hand was born.

Today is a bad day. It shouldn’t be but I didn’t sleep well. I’m never watching Dead Like Me on the eve of a grim anniversary. It’s not good mojo.

Today I’m going to work on my mom’s hat. Maybe I’ll finish it. Although probably not.

We here at Made By Hand have things to say, just not a lot to say. We all work full time (I know, the horror we should be knitting full time but well…bills and all) so we don’t always make huge progress on our hats. Or well, some of us don’t. It seems the ones who are play with the site don’t (hi! that’s me!). Which makes one wonder how much time we waste on the computer instead of knitting.

Wow, I am really digressing today. Must be the lack of power we had all day long…

Anyway, so one of the things we would like to do here is post finished hats of participants. So if you have a post with a completed hat, email us! Or if you don’t have a journal, email us a photo. Or just email us the hat! Wait. That doesn’t work yet. Email us for an address and then mail us the hat and we’ll post the photo that way!

Our email is madebyhand0(at)gmail(dot)com Just sub in @ for (at) and . for (dot) and all will be ducky!

That said, a chemo cap has been mentioned and posted by Anna at Knit-Write–an interesting journal by Anna who is a knitter and writer. So check it out. Or don’t. I’m not your mom and can’t make you. I could guilt you. I’m pretty good at guilt. Oh god, I need to get out. Darn power outages….
